Admiralty district is among the Central and borders with Moscow, Kirov, Central districts. Along the embankments of the English and Admiralty is the border with Vasileostrovsky district. Most of the territory of the district, between the Bolshaya Neva and Fontanka, is part of the historical core of St. Petersburg, the layout of which was formed mainly in the first half of the XVIII century.
In the 18th century, the city began to be divided into parts. The private bailiff was both the chief police officer in the district and the head of administration. Some of the buildings of the police parts are still preserved. One of the most famous, on Repin square - red-brick building, similar to the Florentine town hall.
The territory of the district is crossed from East to West by the Moika river, the Griboyedov canal, the Fontanka river, the Obvodny canal, and Sadovaya street, and from North to South by two radial highways stretching from the Admiralty-Gorokhovaya street and Voznesensky Avenue, its continuation Izmailovsky Avenue, as well as Moscow, Lermontovsky and Staro-Peterhof avenues.
